Life Cycle Assessment of Management Scenarios for Dredged Sediments: Environmental Impacts Caused during Landfilling and Soil Conditioning

The management of dredged sediments is a challenging issue since it involves the interconnection complex economic, social, technical and environmental aspects. EU LIFE SURE project aimed to apply more sustainable dredging technique Malmfjärden Bay in Kalmar/Sweden (a shallow urban water body with high content nutrients) and, additionally, involved beneficial uses for material, line circular economy concept. To achieve this, life cycle assessment (LCA) study was carried out assess potential impacts associated two scenarios: sediment landfilling (S1) soil conditioning (S2). This LCA also evaluate compare costs related each scenario. S1 contemplated construction operation landfill 100 years, including collection discharge leachate biogas. S2 included use soils avoidance producing using fertilisers. Results showed that (S2) (total impact: ?6.4 PE) scenario fewer best economic evaluation. mainly positive savings produced by reducing fertiliser consumption (which avoided purchase costs). However, linked negative effects eutrophication toxicity categories due possible spread nutrients pollutants terrestrial aquatic environments. In order mitigate this problem, could be pre-treated reduce their risk pollution. Moreover, main impact (S1, total 1.6 emission global warming-contributing gases during facility.
